220.127.116.11: Product Recall Monitoring
Staff should, on a monthly basis, seek information on recalls of juvenile products that may be in use at the facility. Of particular importance are recalls related to cribs, bassinets, and portable play yards that may be used for infant sleep. Additionally, caregivers/teachers should be aware of recalls of toys, playground equipment, strollers, and any other product routinely used by children in the child care facility.
RATIONALEProduct recalls are often ineffective at removing hazardous products from use because the owners/users are not aware of the recall. Children have died in child care settings from injury related to sleep equipment that had been recalled.
COMMENTSThe U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) offers a free subscription email service for product recall notices at http://www.cpsc.gov/cpsclist.aspx. Subscribers can note that they only want to receive recalls related to juvenile products.
